Lake Constance, or Bodensee, is located in the heart of Europe at the meeting point of three states: Germany to the north, Switzerland to the South and Austria to the East. It is one of the largest lakes on the European continent, but still is possible to travel all around it by bicycle.
It is about 270 km mostly along a fully flat bicycle track. The ring of Lake Constance is an ideal route for families or for beginners. It is possible to plan very short stages and enjoy the attractions, the beaches and the towns of the lake in peace. Along its shores there are also facilities, restaurants, cafes, bathing establishments, museums, zoos, wellness centers and many other conveniences. Given the strong tourist vocation of the area, the bicycle can be quite crowded in the summer.
The Cycle Track of Lake Constance, or Bodensee-Radweg, allows you to admire the intense blue of the lake closely and is surrounded by green nature. Thanks to its particularly mild climate, the hills around this water mirror are covered with vineyards, lemons and flowers.
The largest city overlooking the lake is Costance, one of the most important university cities in southern Germany. It is often the starting point and the arrival of the cycling ring that surrounds the lake. Originally from Constance was Count Ferdinand Von Zeppelin, inventor of the famous airship: to him and to his invention is dedicated a museum along the route.
The Meersburg Castle, perched on a cliff dominating the lake, and the medieval town of Lindau located on an island linked to the track by a bridge, are also to be visited.
Very interesting are the two islands of Reichenau (UNESCO Heritage) and Mainau. The latter is particularly famous for its wonderful gardens, but entry is for a fee.
